Thunderbird, formerly Andy rocking horse

Little Crow on Thunderbird

Little Crow on Thunderbird

This was built from the original Andy pattern. I embellished the design a bit, altered the seat and covered it with padding and leather. I also added a removable foot peg that could be used for the smallest capable rider. My nephew had had this since shortly after his first birthday. He's been riding since around two, and at 2 1/2 he's outgrowing the pegs and will be touching the platform by three.

This is the first rocking horse I ever made. The plans are simple and straight forward. By the time I was done, our woodshop had a router, routing table and spindle sander. And I know what a flush trim bit is now. The entire pattern was cut with a jigsaw.

Pity it cannot be seen. Would be great if you could make another photo of it. (my email if you prefer - tslattery2001-at-yah00.com.au

Curios about the Ojibwe thunderbird - could you tell us a bit more about it, please.

Did a quick search on it, discovered it's a North American Indian tribe's symbol and so on. Would be better, I think to hear about it from yourself, a personal perspective.

You can't see it well since the boy is on it, but there is a graphic image of an Ojibwe thunderbird on both sides of the horse below the seat.

Congratulations on a fine rocking horse, and thank you for the submission.

Hope you have many years of having fun making things out of wood.

Also think Thunderbird is a great name.
